Nigerian midfielder returns to English football

It has been confirmed that former Chelsea star, John Obi Mikel, will be a part of Middlesbrough’s campaign for a promotion to the Premier League.

The Nigerian international midfielder has spent the past two years playing for Tianjin TEDA, in the Chinese Super League. He’s now returning to English football and joining Middlesbrough as a free agent by mutual consent between the two clubs during this month

Mikel has not played for over 10 weeks but there should be no doubt regarding his fitness. The athletic midfielder is said to be fit and eager to start delivering for his new club. His last appearance with Tianjin was at the end of October, scoring a goal and playing for the full 90 minutes.

He’s not played for Nigeria since last summer’s World Cup but is believed to return to the national team ahead of this summer’s African Cup of Nations.

“Mikel has not played for a while now.  I believe he wants to secure his job situation before he will worry about the Super Eagles.”

The deal is confirmed to be on a short term basis, and the midfielder will wear the No.2 shirt at the Riverside Stadium.

It’s safe to say that the former Stamford Bridge favourite is well decorated. The popular Nigerian midfielder has previously won the Premier League twice,  he’s a three-time FA Cup winner and the owner of Champions League, Europa League and League Cup winners’ medals.

He moved to Asia and the Chinese Super League in January 2017 after 10 successful seasons, and 374 appearances for the South West London club.
