Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has talked to reporters about Kobbie Mainoo and his recent struggles. Amorim explained how he deployed the youngster during United’s 2-0 Europa League victory against FCSB. The Red Devils now have four successive wins in Europe; a run that sent them to the Europa League last 16.
Diogo Dalot broke the deadlock early in the second half, arriving unmarked at the back post to guide a composed finish into the net. The Portuguese full-back capitalised on a moment of brilliance from Kobbie Mainoo, who drove forward before delivering a pinpoint low cross from the right side of the penalty area. Dalot, timing his run to perfection, met the ball with precision, sweeping it past the helpless goalkeeper to give Manchester United the lead.
And the United midfielder didnât have to wait long to make his mark on the scoresheet, finding the net just eight minutes later. Lurking inside the box, he reacted sharply to Alejandro Garnachoâs inviting delivery from the left, positioning himself perfectly to meet the cross. With composure beyond his years, he guided a precise low finish into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot. It was a well-taken goal that capped off an impressive passage of play, further strengthening Unitedâs grip on the match.
Kobbie Mainoo Gets New Role
Up until now, Mainoo has primarily played as one of the two central midfielders in Amorimâs well-drilled 3-4-2-1 system. He operated in a deeper role where his composure on the ball and ability to dictate play have been evident.
However, during Thursdayâs match, the youngster was pushed further forward into an attacking midfield positionâa tactical tweak that paid off handsomely. With Bruno Fernandes dropping deeper into central midfield to orchestrate proceedings, Mainoo thrived in his advanced role, showcasing his ability to influence the game higher up the pitch.
His intelligent movement, quick exchanges, and eye for goal added an extra dimension to Unitedâs attack, making him a constant threat in and around the oppositionâs penalty area.
After the match, Amorim heaped praise on Mainooâs display, acknowledging that the positional change had allowed the 19-year-old to play with greater freedom and express himself more effectively.
âI think Kobbie Mainoo in that position played very well,â the Portuguese told TNT Sports. âHe had more freedom with not much responsibility running back all the time.â
Amorim also explained that concerns over Mainooâs defensive vulnerabilities had influenced the decision to adjust his role on the pitch.
âI put Kobbie Mainoo in that position, we need time to understand the players as he was struggling a lot defending as a midfielder,â he said.
âAs a 10 he was so free playing the ball near the box. We need time to work with the players to understand what the best position is for them.â
Former United academy graduate Robbie Savage was equally impressed with Mainooâs performance, calling on Amorim to keep the youngster in the advanced midfield role moving forward.
United will be playing Crystal Palace at home in the Premier League on Sunday.
